Last weekend saw the U18 Women’s 7’s travel to Vichy in France for the Rugby Europe U18 Championships. This year the format was altered to allow for the qualification for Youth Olympic Games. This meant the tournament was played in April instead of September and that sixteen teams competed instead of twelve.

Sweden faced a tough group on day one, with England (playing as Great Britain for the Olympic purpose) and Russia, both World Series teams sending very strong sides, and Georgia completing the group.

We started with a very good performance but a narrow loss to Russia, but bounced back to beat Georgia very well. Our last group game saw Sweden hold GB to a narrow lead at halftime, but injuries and their bench helped them to pull away in the second half.

This meant we would play in the Challenge Trophy on day two. We started well with a big win against Andorra. However our second game, against Grand Prix team Belgium, was played in awful storm conditions and the quality of rugby also deteriorated because of the weather. We lost a very tight game to send us into a play-off with Latvia for 11th/12th place. Unfortunately, despite some brave and determined play we narrowly lost again.

The girls were very disappointed as they had worked so hard all weekend, but there were lots of positives to take from the weekend. We saw some fantastic leadership from some players and some of our younger girls played brilliantly, both of which show a lot of promise for the future of Swedish Women’s 7’s.

It was a privilege to coach the girls and I look forward to working with them again soon.

Tack!

//Sean Thomson

Mycket bra rugby på hög nivå, lite besvikelse hos tjejerna och mycket utveckling på flera nivåer kan man summera det hela. Tack till alla er som arbetat med och stöttat laget inför och under EM .
